On this forth of July weekend I knew I wanted to share the lyrics to a song with you but I couldn’t decide which patriotic song to share. After much back and forth I decided to share two songs with you :) The first song, My Country ‘Tis of Thee is a traditional patriotic song and the other is God Bless the USA/I'm Proud to be an American, a more contemporary song. I think it is important to teach patriotic songs to our children and include them in your scrapbooks. When you go to scrapbook your July 4th celebration consider including either all or part of these lyrics on your layout. Maybe just pick the verse that means the most to you. In addition to talking about your July 4th traditions in your journaling also consider discussing why your favorite patriotic song is important to you.
My Country 'Tis of Thee
Written by: Samuel Francis Smith
My country, 'tis of thee,
Sweet land of Liberty,
Of thee I sing;
Land where my fathers died,
Land of the pilgrim's pride!
From ev'ry mountain side,
Let freedom ring!
My native country thee,
Land of the noble free,
Thy name I love.
I love thy rocks and rills,
Thy woods and templed hills;
My heart with rapture thrills,
Like that above.
Let music swell the breeze,
And ring from all the trees,
Sweet freedom's song.
Let mortal tongues awake;
Let all that breathe partake;
Let rocks their silence break,
the sound prolong.
Our fathers' God, to Thee,
Author of Liberty,
To Thee we sing.
Long may our land be bright,
With freedom's holy light;
Protect us by Thy might,
Great God, our King!
God Bless the USA/I'm Proud to be an American
Written by: Lee Greenwood
If tomorrow all the things were gone
I'd worked for all my life,
And I had to start again
with just my children and my wife,
I'd thank my lucky stars
to be living here today,
'Cause the flag still stands for freedom
and they can't take that away.
I'm proud to be an American
where at least I know I'm free,
And I won't forget the men who died
who gave that right to me,
And I gladly stand up next to you
and defend her still today,
'Cause there ain't no doubt I love this land
God Bless the U.S.A.
From the lakes of Minnesota
to the hills of Tennessee,
Across the plains of Texas
from sea to shining sea.
From Detroit down to Houston
and New York to L.A.,
There's pride in every American heart
and it's time we stand and say:
I'm proud to be an American
where at least I know I'm free,
And I won't forget the men who died
who gave that right to me,
And I gladly stand up next to you
and defend her still today,
'Cause there ain't no doubt I love this land
God Bless the U.S.A.
Happy scrapping!
