Adorable No Sew Tote Bag

I came across an adorable no sew tote bag via Pinterest (you gals know how much I love Pinterest!) and knew I just had to make one! You are going to love it as much as I do I just know it! Check it out!

 

 

Isn’t it darling! It is too stinking cute (if I do say so myself - lol)!  Yes I’ll say it again - this bag is no sew – can you believe it! Maybe someday I will get some sewing lessons but I think it is fantastic that I can make a super cute tote bag without sewing a thing!

 

The fabric is the Stampin’ Up! Candy Cane Christmas Designer Fabric. My inspiration was from the blog Scattered Thoughts of a Crafty Mom. I pretty much followed her tutorial step by step to create my no sew tote bag.  However, my fabric strips are 2” x 28” and I glued them 1.75” apart. And my ruffles go completely up the front of the bag. I also like the look of the fraying edges so I did not use pinking shears.

 

I used a hot glue gun to make all of those ruffles and the pleated fabric flower. Even the covered button for the flower center was made with a glue gun. I finished off the top of the tote with the Gumball Green Stitched Satin Ribbon.

Highlights from the Stampin’ Up! 2012 Convention – Project Ideas from the Stampin’ Up! Museum

On the first day of the 2012 Stampin’ Up! Convention we had the opportunity to take a tour of the Riverton Distribution Center Campus.

 

 

It is about a 20 minute drive from Salt Lake City. While at the Riverton Distribution Center you can tour the Stampin’ Up! Museum. Here you can learn the history of Stampin’ Up! as well as get a ton of project ideas. There are several rooms set up with various vignettes showcasing many different products.

 

Today I thought I’d share with you a bunch of the project ideas from the museum! When you first walk into the museum the Stampin’ Up! statement of the heart is framed in a beautiful frame over a welcome table. The statement of the heart is:

 

"To love what we do and share what we love, as we help others enjoy creativity and worthwhile accomplishments . . . in this we make a difference."

 

As you turn the corner you reach the first project display.The wallpaper is First Edition DSP!

 

Here is a closer look at the framed artwork featuring the 2012-2014 In Colors: Raspberry Ripple, Gumball Green, Summer Starfruit, Midnight Muse, and Primrose

 

On the opposite wall is a neat "tree" (not sure what else to call it) made from card stock.

 

 

 

In the next room there was a super sweet little girl bedroom vignette with a "M" on the wall -- perfect for my girls! Love the flowers on the wall! The chandelier is all paper flowers too!

 

The next space features a beautifully decorated holiday mantel with candles, cards, and garland. 

 

There was another room decorated like a family or living room. Over the sofa there was some really neat artwork featuring the blossom from the Betsy Blossom stamp set. The flowers are not painted; they are paper!

Sneak Peak: Technique Thursday class sample

Each month I offer a fun paper crafting technique class. Some past topics included 2 step stamping, custom colored pearls, heat embossing and the faux metal technique, and stamping with markers.

 

At the first technique class you will create a cute little technique book using the Big Shot and learn the featured technique. Each time you attend the Technique Thursday class you will add a sample to your technique book. Your technique book will become a great reference guide! During the class you will also create a project using the featured technique.

 

This month we will be learning how to make a variety of flowers – 3 different paper flowers and 1 fabric flower. Check out this great little gift box we will be making!

Memo Board home décor project using Spice Cake Designer fabric

Do you have a memo board somewhere in your home or office that you post photos, invitations, coupons, and the like? I do, actually now that I think about it, I have a few of them – 1 in the kitchen, 1 in the laundry room, and 2 in the playroom/my crafting area. Let’s admit it, they are cute and they keep those important little things that you don’t want to misplace handy.

 

Memo boards are pretty easy to make and because they are so practical they make great gifts! I made this memo board with the Spice Cake Designer Fabric. Feel free to use one of our other fabrics for a completely different look.

 

 

To make this memo board you will need the following supplies:

• Spice Cake Designer Fabric (half of a fat quarter)
• Victoria crochet trim – 48 inches
• Vanilla seam binding – 42 inches
• 2 Cork sheets
• Batting
• Soft Suede 12x12 card stock
• Card board packaging from any Designer Series Paper (or any other heavy weight cardboard that is 12x12)
• Sticky strip, Crystal Effects, and multipurpose adhesive

 

Tips during assembly:

• The finished size is just over 12x12.
• Use the multipurpose adhesive to adhere the cork sheets to the heavy weight cardboard. Then use the multipurpose adhesive to attach the batting to the cork sheets. Don’t be heavy handed with the liquid adhesive because it will seep through the batting. Then let it dry before you attach the fabric.
• Use the sticky strip to attach the fabric to the board. Start with the corners and be sure to pull the fabric taught.
• Use the Crystal Effects to tack down the crochet trim & seam binding to the board.
• The Soft Suede 12x12 card stock will cover the back of the project to give it a finished look.
• To hang the memo board you could attach a ribbon bow to the board or use a simple picture hanger.

Spice Cake Fabric Pumpkin

Do any of you sew? Well I am by no means an expert. To tell you the truth, I don’t know if I’d even qualify to be a novice – haha! But last month when I went to the INKcredible Impressions Fall Fest I was completely inspired by these Spice Cake fabric pumpkins made by fellow Stampin’ Up! demonstrator Donna R.

 

 

She provided the step by step instructions on how to make them and I thought, hey I can do that!

 

So I borrowed a sewing machine from my friend Deb. It took me 2 days to thread the needle on the darn thing; like I said I am brand new at this…then the kids came home from school, so my project was put on hold until the next day. Anyhow I finally have some time, everything all set, press the peddle, all ready to make my super cute fabric pumpkin…. and then the machine didn’t work. Can you believe it?? I called Deb… went through the user manual..no luck, the darn machine didn’t work. So after 3 days of setting up the sewing machine I ended up sewing the pumpkin by hand – lol! Oh well, at least I gave it a try! Here is my cute little pumpkin.

 

 

What do you think?? I think it came out alright considering it is my first ever sewing project! Hey if I can do it, you certainly can too!

 

And even though things didn’t go well with the sewing machine, Donna said she would help me find a sewing machine that is right for me. Which means more simple sewing projects are in my future – be on the lookout!

 

I guess the moral of the story is that at least I stretched out of my crafting comfort zone and tried something new! What new crafting project have you wanted to try? Let me know in the comment field below.

How would you like to get a Big Shot for FREE???

I would love to get a Big Shot for FREE!  How about you? If you have no idea what I’m talking about and wondering what the heck the Big Shot is I’ll explain. The Big Shot is an awesome paper crafting tool that I use frequently. It is a die cutting system that allows you to die cut and/or emboss about 50 different materials!

 By using steel-ruled and chemically-etched dies, the Big Shot cuts out images by passing card stock and other materials through rollers that utilize pressure to cut through the materials. With just a couple turns of the handle, you’ll be able to cut through a wide variety of materials. The Big Shot also comes with special cutting pads and a cutting platform. Currently, the Big Shot utilizes two types of dies: Steel Rule and Chemically-Etched.

Here is a sampling of the types of materials which work well with the Big Shot machine and Bigz and Originals dies.  As a rule of thumb, if you can cut it using your Craft & Paper Scissors then you should be able to cut the material with your Big Shot machine and Bigz or Originals dies.

• Vellum, Card stock, Patterned paper, Flocked paper
• Thick corkboard, Thick chipboard (59 mil)
• Colored magnet 
• Metal mesh, Aluminum (.016)
• Adhesive and non-adhesive mat board
• Shelf liner, Vinyl
• Fine sandpaper
• Clear acetate (20 mil)
• Textured paper, Metallic paper, Linen paper
• Suede paper, Embossed metallic paper, Self-adhesive glitter paper
• Fabric, Canvas, Iron-on fabric, Soft plush fabric, Burlap, Velvet, Corduroy
• Lace, Heavyweight denim, Quilt batting, Warm & natural batting
• Self-adhesive cork, Self-adhesive foam, Self-adhesive magnet

To give you a better idea about what you can make with the Big Shot, I thought I would share some projects with you. As you will see the Big Shot is a super versatile tool and can be used for a wide variety of projects.

 

With this first project I was able to create a 3D favor bag and coordinating 3x3 card set. The favor bag was created by using the Fancy Favor Bigz XL Die.

 

 

This card shows one of my favorite things to do with the Big Shot – dry embossing. Check out the background of this card. I used the new Snow Burst Textured Embossing Folder to create the textured background.

 

 

Here is another card that I embossed with the Big Shot. With this card I used the Framed Tulips embossing folder to create the embossed border around the card. And the butterfly was cut out AND embossed with the Beautiful Wings Embosslits Die.

 

 

Check out this card. I didn’t cut out that fabric leaf by hand. I used the Leaves #2 Originals Die to cut it out.

 

 

And that is just the tip of the iceberg! I could go on and on with more projects that you can make using the Big Shot. The ideas and projects are truly endless!

Using fabric on your card projects

Have you noticed that fabric is showing up on all sorts of paper crafting projects? You may be intimidated by using fabric on your next card – I know I was at first -- but I’m here to tell you it is easier than you think! Hey if I can do it, I have no doubt that you can too! And the best part – no sewing required!

 

Today I am going to share with you three different cards that feature fabric.

 

There were a couple of things I realized that helped me get past my fear of using fabric on my paper crafting projects. 

• First I thought of fabric as “paper”. I began to look at fabric as paper with a softer texture. Really you use fabric in the same way you would use patterned paper.
• Then someone shared with me that all I needed to adhere the fabric to my card project was a Stampin’ Up! glue stick – yes a glue stick – ok how hard could this really be if I only needed a glue stick.
• Finally it dawned on me, the light bulb went on -- I am already using fabric on my paper crafting projects and I bet you are too! It is called ribbon – satin, gingham, velvet, twill, and lace ribbon (to name a few!)

 

Are you not convinced? Are you still hesitant? Are you thinking “but Jess it’s fabric, don’t you need to stitch it?? Don’t I need a sewing machine or at least a needle and some thread??” My answer to you is nope, you don’t need a sewing machine and you don’t need a needle and thread. I used a regular, old glue stick for all 3 of these cards.

 

Check out this first card.

Look at that leaf. It isn’t made with the Spice Cake Designer Series Paper. The leaf was made with the Spice Cake Designer Fabric!

You can die cut fabric just like you can die cut paper! And notice no stitching anywhere on the card.

 

Ok, check out this Christmas card using the Holly Berry Bouquet paper and fabric as well as the Pines and Poinsettias stamp set.

 

The fabric on this card is the Wild Wasabi with floral pattern die cut Top Note image. Doesn’t it look just like paper? And again no stitching necessary.

 

I know what you are thinking – those cards are neat and everything but I used the Big Shot to cut out my fabric shapes. So I must need the Big Shot to cut fabric…ok, hold your horses. You don’t need the Big Shot to cut fabric (although it does do a lovely job cutting the fabric for you don’t you think?), really all you need is a good pair of scissors such as the Stampin’ Up! Craft Scissors.  Check out this last card.

 

 

For this card all I did was cut 3 strips of Spice Cake Designer Fabric using my Stampin’ Up! Craft Scissors and adhered them to the card base with glue stick.

Scrapbooking: creating a month in review layout

Hey as scrapbookers are we every really caught up?? As I shared with you yesterday I have been itching to scrapbook. I feel like I have been behind. I’m sure you can relate – I know I’m not the only one with a backlog right??

 

I don’t think you can ever truly be caught up with scrapbooking because every day we are creating new history to record. Unless you are scrapbooking in the moment, how can we ever be caught up? Most of the time I don’t sweat being behind on my scrapbooking to do list. But I have pages that have been on my “to do” list for over a year now and I would like to record these events. When my scrapbooking to do list gets this long then I start to feel overwhelmed. I don’t know about you but if you are anything like me then you don’t care for that overwhelmed feeling. So when this happens to me I turn to a “review” layout.

 

What is a review layout?

 

To me a review layout is one that reviews a given amount of time. The amount of time you wish to review is completely up to you.  I have done review layouts that span everything from a week such as a review of vacation to a year. The year in review was a simple 2 page spread with one significant photo from each month and a simple bullet point journaling list. Most frequently my review layouts cover a month or a season. The season may be an actual season such as summer or a sport season like t-ball or soccer.

 

The best part of a review layout is that you get caught up. You capture the highlights of the memories that have been on your project to do list. You can always create a more detailed layout on any of the subjects in your review layout at another time but the event is captured. You have recorded the moment and to me that is what is most important as the family historian.

 

Today my review layout spans September 2010.

 

 

Since September is the start of fall I choose card stock and Designer Series Paper that felt like fall to me but since the beginning of September can still be warm here in New Jersey, I used flowers as accents and embellishments. My color scheme consists of Spice Cake Designer Series Paper and Soft Suede and Pool Party card stock. I am so excited about these flower embellishments. Let’s take a closer look at them.

 

 

Aren’t these flowers soooo cool!?? The flower on the left is a fabric twisted flower. I used one of the Spice Cake Designer Fabrics to create this embellishment. The remaining flowers are all punched die cut flowers that I layered, distressed, inked and assembled. Ok, now check out those colored pearls – those are the Stampin’ Up! basic pearls that I altered with a Sharpie Marker. Isn’t that cool! You can make the pearls any color you want!
